London: A government adviser has warned that British nuclear plants face risk of terrorist attacks by unmanned drone aircrafts, a report said.

John Large, who has advised the French government after a growing number of mysterious unmanned flights were noticed over France's nuclear plants, warned that drones also posed a threat to the United Kingdom's 16 operational reactors, adding that such an attack would kill tens of thousands of people, reported The Daily Express.

However, Large complained that authorities are "burying their heads in the sand."

His call for an urgent security revamp came as figures showed that nuclear plants suffered 37 security breaches last year and a dozen times since 2011, including by at least one drone.

Counterterrorism experts have already warned that the Islamic State ( IS ) has recruited chemical weapons specialists and are "intent on building a dirty bomb."

On being asked if a security review was required in the wake of terror attacks in France and Denmark, Large replied in the affirmative.
