Whilst the world media was busy making the Charlie Hebdo shootings a quintessence of violence, human aggression and terrorism, there was a biblical massacre ravaging the African country of Nigeria.
As the world knew, on the 7th of january earlier this year, two masked gunmen barged into the satirical newspaper, Charlie Hebdo, and opened fire killing 12 people and injuring several.Ironically, a high magnitude killing spree was going on from 3rd january to 7th of january, where Boko Haram, the jihadi terrorist group based in Nigeria started an onslaught of innocent civilians.
Is 'sympathy' a thing for the privileged? Or is life and freedom all about for the so called developed ? The Charlie Hebdo shootings were no doubt the most inhuman attack on the freedom of speech but the complete ignorance of a heinous massacre is a total unsettling issue. Children, women and innocent men were shot point blank while fleeing the town of Baga across the river Chad, which was being overrun by the terrorists.
Amnesty international released satellite imagery of the fishing town of Baga on 9th of january which gave an idea of the extent of destruction done. Corpses lay around in the bushes of the streets and many a buildings were petrol bombed. There was a total media blackout in the area hence the information and insights of the massacre are known very little because the government has at first denied of any such happening and the death toll is estimated of something about 200 to 2000+ which is no doubt alarming .
Where are the good men and women who stood up for the victims of the Charlie Hebdo? The point is not that a mishap is greater or lesser than the other but the point is, why is a mishap being shadowed totally and not being pointed up by any of the world authorities, leaders or the media? When will epiphany strike the world that the most upsetting killings in the recent times are being COMPLETELY ignored ? The extremities are so far that the leader of Boko haram, Abubakar Shekau, claimed the Baga massacre and the government is taking no measures whatsoever to counter these atrocities owing to the fact that the country's government itselves is in a corrupt and destitute state where as France caught the culprits of the shooting within 24 hours and brightened up it's security aftermath the Charlie Hebdo shootings with an overwhelming budget for its new security plans.
The Boko haram atrocities and terror in the north eastern parts of Africa is not new. They are known to their murder and kidnappings and the Chibok school girls kidnapping is still a pending case by the government who failed to rescue 200 schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko haram.
While many an international leaders condemned the atrocities of terrorism and offered their condolences to the victims, there are slim to NO reactions on the Baga massacre by any international leaders or media.
The United States, who happen to be the one to strike on terrorism on a large scale have not bat an eye lid on this.Is it because they believe that terrorism exists in countries which happen to bring them capitals and profits? As Mother Teresa quoted ''If we have no peace, it's because we have forgotten that we belong to each other''Help isn't something that is done to project one's reputation and goodwill, it's something more of a task done for the benefit of the downtrodden and helpless. Though they say the world is a global village, time to time, it shows us how distant we actually are from the truth and realities.
