Highlights of Narendra Modi's speech:

  • Our relationship has been complex in recent decades
  • But we have a historic responsibility to turn it into source of strength & force of good for world
  • I stressed on the need for China to re-consider its approach to some issues that hold us back from realising full potential of our partnership
  • We re-iterated need and importance for peace on borders
  • I sought tangible progress on issues relating to visa policy and trans-border rivers. I also discussed some of our regional concerns
  • Our decision to enhance strategic communication & coordination on our region is especially significant
  • We both reiterated our strong commitment to make all efforts to maintain peace and tranquility in the border region
  • We agreed that we continue to explore a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable resolution
  • We have decided to take our relationship out of governments in national capitals to the States and the people.
  • For the first time India has launched a State/Povincial Leaders' forum with another nation.We agreed that as we move ahead, we should be sensitive to each other's interests and strengthen mutual trust and confidence
Together with Li, he inspected the guard of honour and then settled for formal talks with him during which the two sides were expected to discuss a host of issues including the border issue as well as Chinese investments in India.
The Prime Minister is expected to seek support for his 'Make in India' initiative while inviting Chinese investment in India.
Several agreements were expected to signed after Modi-Li talks. This is the second round of talks Modi is having with the Chinese leadership during his current three-day China trip.
He had over five hours of informal talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday, during which all the contentious issues including the border issue were discussed. Today's talks were the extension of yesterday's Modi-Xi talks.
Modi arrived here last night from Xi'an. After series of meetings on Friday including an address to the students of Tsinghua university and attending the demonstration of Yoga-Tai Chi, the Chinese martial art, along with Li, he would head to Shanghai this evening.
Tomorrow, he would meet a number of CEOs of top Chinese companies, address India-China Business Forum, open the first Gandhian studies centre at Fudan university and address Indian community in Shanghai after which he will leave for Mongolia.
