President Barack Obama on Friday decried the deadly truck attack in Nice as a "tragic and appalling" on freedom and pledged firm US support for France.

"We cannot give in to fear or turn on each other or sacrifice our way of life," Obama told a gathering of diplomats at the White House attended by French Ambassador Gerard Araud.

He promised once again to "destroy" the Islamic State group, while "staying true to our values, values of pluralism and rule of law and diversity and freedoms... the very freedoms that the people of Nice were celebrating last night on Bastille Day."

The US leader slammed the "death and nihilism that terrorists offer," and said that "the hatred and violence of a few ultimately is no match for the love and decency and hard work of people of good will and compassion."

Obama said he once again pledged support to France in a call to President Francois Hollande after Thursday night's attack, which left at least 84 dead and dozens more still fighting for their lives.

"I reminded him that France is America's oldest ally and one of our strongest. We owe our freedom to each other," Obama said, adding that the "entire world... stands in solidarity with the people of France during this difficult time."
