Hamali workers job scam in Karimnagar district
The demand for a hamali who transports liquor to outlets has skyrocketed in the district. There are reports that a person is willing to pay whopping Rs 16 lakh as bribe to get the job, as he earns nearly Rs 15 lakh a year and Rs 2,500 daily.

Recently, a scam involving recruitment of hamali workers surfaced in the district. Not only does the job demand heavy bribes, it also needs recommendations of top government officials. In a liquor depot in Karimnagar, to which all truck loads of liquor come initially, hamalis, who supply liquor, earn nearly Rs 2,500 a day. The amount shoots up specially during festive seasons. During the last Dasara 80 hamalis made a lot of money illegally.
However, recently recruited labourers, who claim that they are permanent, have become a headache to the old hamali workers. The workers tried hard to stall the recruitment so that their jobs were not threatened. As news spread about earnings of hamalis, even politicians were taken aback by the quantum of their earnings. Shocked political leaders allegedly decided to take bribes from prospective candidates to recruit them as hamalis.
An incident has come to light when 26 candidates paid bribes of Rs 16 lakh each for the post of a hamali ( Rs 4.16 crore). After persuading 80 workers to allow 26 hamalis to join them, the leaders collected Rs 16 lakh each from each candidate.
They promised to give Rs 3 lakh each to the 80 hamalis and fixed the deal. After distributing Rs 3 lakh to each hamali, the leaders and officials decided to share the booty. If sources are to be believed, an MLA from the district is also involved in the scam. However, when differences cropped up on sharing of money, one MLA, who was disappointed with his share, leaked the scam details to the media.
After coming to know of the fabulous earnings , both legal and illegal, people are ready to pay huge amounts as dowry to the prospective bridegrooms among the hamalis.
They suspect that the earnings are more than what they show, as hamalis supply daily liquor worth crores to wine shops.
