Khammam: Congress workers paid tributes to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her 33rd death anniversary in Khammam on Tuesday.

After garlanding the portrait of Indira Gandhi at the party office here on Tuesday, District Congress Committee president Aitham Satyam remembered her supreme sacrifice for the unity and integrity of the nation.

“Indira Gandhi, daughter of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, was the only woman who served as the Prime Minister of India, will always be remembered as a leader of masses with strong commitment towards the uplift of poor and downtrodden,” he said. She is known as the ‘Iron Lady of India’, who never succumbed to any pressure, he added.

The leaders on the occasion also hailed Indira Gandhi as the tallest leader ever produced by the country who provided able administration. They also took oath on the occasion to strengthen the Congress party.

Meanwhile, a series of meetings organised throughout the district to mark the occasion. It may be noted here that Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister from 1966 to 1977 and from 1980 until her assassination in 1984.

Senior leaders Banoth Somla Naik, VV Appa Rao, Kotha Sriramulu, Vaddeboina Narsimha Rao, Nagandla Deepak Chowdary, YB Tilak, Md Fazal, Md Tajuddin Baba, B Balaji Rao Naik, Md Yakub Pasha and Raju Naik were among others present.
