Nearly 1,100 sheep brought from Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam districts of neighbouring Andhra Pradesh die due to harsh weather conditions

Kothagudem: The 2,700 units of sheep handed over to the beneficiaries out of targeted 5,524 units in the district, as many as 1,100 sheep perished as the animals brought from Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam districts of neighbouring Andhra Pradesh could not get acclimatised to local weather conditions, said the officials.

Besides, it is learnt that the sheep have been distributed to ineligible persons at some places. According to officials of Animal Husbandry department, 2,700 units were distributed to beneficiaries in 23 mandals belonging to Yadava, Golla and Kuruma communities.

A unit comprises of 20 female sheep and one ram (a male sheep). While the unit price is Rs 1.25 lakh, the beneficiary has to pay Rs 31,250 and the remaining Rs 93,750 would be borne by the government as subsidy.

Though initially, one person in a family was to be given each unit, subsequently the government issued orders that all family members could be registered. As a result, two or sometimes three from the family managed to get the sheep when they were chosen through draw of lots.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that of the units allotted in Burgampadu, Annapureddy, Chandrugonda, Julurupadu and Aswapuram mandals, 40 units have allegedly been sold to others, defeating the very purpose for which the government had decided to allot them. Further there were rumours that those who sold the units were not sheep-rearing persons.
