New Delhi: Lok Sabha Member from Khammam Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy on Wednesday sought to know whether catfish were grown in south India, including Telangana, and what steps the Centre had contemplated to prohibit rearing of catfish.

Replying to the written question submitted to him by the MP on the floor of Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Agriculture Krishna Raj admitted consumption of catfish in South India. African catfish is very widely used in the states like Karnataka. The Centre had imposed a ban on growing the catfish.

On the basis of recommendations of National committee, catfish is being imported from Bangladesh and other countries alike, informed the Union Minister.
