Different states have different ways of performing the ritual, but the timing is always the same, i.e., before the advent of monsoon, to start cultivation and related works.

Kothagudem: The tribals of all states like Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradehs, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana – organise ‘Seed Festival’ in the month of May. Different states have different ways of performing the ritual, but the timing is always the same, i.e., before the advent of monsoon, to start cultivation and related works.

In Telangana, the tribal women living in agency mandals of Bhadrachalam-Kothagudem district will organise the function on a grand scale. The seed festival is most common in agency mandals – Dummagudem and Charla.

The festival will be organised in traditional way. The tribal women will sing and dance on the roads to collect money from the passersby.

The women will invite their neighbours for the puja to Grama Devatha on the outskirts of the village in the early hours of the day. The women will collect all types of seeds and keep them separately in a box, which will be placed before the Goddess. Then they will perform special puja. This process will continue for three to five days.

During all these three days, the tribal women will sing songs and dance in the temple premises. Later they will spray the seeds in their lands for cultivation. Only women will particpate in the puja rituals.

After the five days, the men will go into the forest for hunting wild animals. They will kill the animals and bring the bodies back in a procession.

Speaking to The Hans India, Adivasi tribal leader Madivi Nehru said each State has different way of performing the seed festival. Even in Telangana, festival will be conducted differently in Adilabad, Khammam and Kothagudem districts. Its tribals’ traditional way of praying God asking for abundant harvest.
