Police have traced the six-day-old infant abducted from the maternity ward of Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Adilabad district within five hours.

The baby boy born on July 4 to Dirbasi Mamatha, a resident of Chorpalli village in Narnoor mandal was abducted in the wee hours of Tuesday. A complaint was lodged with the police who launched a manhunt and alerted all the police officials in the district to trace the baby.

During the police checks, a vehicle carrying newspapers was stopped and a woman was found hiding an infant.

After confirming the baby was indeed Mamatha’s son, the police arrested the woman Pushpalatha and her husband Nagesh.

The couple later confessed to the crime and said that they did so as the woman was unable to bear a child. After failed efforts for 10 years, they took the extreme step.
