Assam government to set up a Sankardev chair at BU
For the cost of Rs 5 crore, the State Government of Assam has decided to set up the Srimanta Sankardev Chair at Bangalore University
BENGALURU: For the cost of Rs 5 crore the State Government of Assam has decided to set up the Srimanta Sankardev Chair at Bangalore University. It will be providing support financially to the University of Bangalore for the purpose of extending research on the neo-Vaishnavite movement which is being propagated by Sankardev in the northeast part of India, and the literary and cultural contribution of the saint-scholar towards the Assamese society.
Sankardev an Assamese polymath, poet, playwright, and social-religious reformer, he had a major impact on the cultural and religious history of the state in the 15th and 16th centuries.
An MoU to set up the chair is yet to be signed, though.
Bangalore University is already comprised of chairs and centers which are dedicated to Kempegowda, Swami Vivekananda, Buddha, Mahatma Gandhi and BR Ambedkar at its campus and also the affiliated-colleges.
The university had recently set up a local inquiry committee to manage the activities held at these chairs.
