Archakas protest demanding for fixed daily wage

BENGALURU: On Thursday, the archakas working in temples which are maintained by the muzrai department held a protest in the city. As they were not happy with the meagre monthly emolument of around Rs 1,400.
According to Janakiram, the president of Karnataka State Religious Endowment Temple Archakas and Agamikas Association, around 2,000 archaks will be participating in the protest. The protest has been called demanding for fixing the wages at the rate of Rs 249 per day, the minimum daily wage which has been fixed by the Centre, and to grant Rs 2 lakh from the General Reserve Fund as compensation to the family members of the deceased archaks.
"At present, we are being given Rs 4,000 per month for doing pujas and rituals. Out of this, archakas will get only Rs 1,400, which is below Rs 50 per day," he said.
He had also alleged that the government has given Rs 410 crore and Rs 200 crore to the Muslim and Christians community, but has not granted any funds to the Hindu temples.
