The video, which has gone viral on the internet, continues to warn the public on the dangers of driving without your seat belt, or as they put it “your pretty face won’t look so good after an accident”.
Lines of hijras dress in neatly pleated identical sarees appear from behind the speaker, and walk down the streets of Mumbai, squeezing their way into the gaps between in the traffic. “If you are going to drive like a pilot, then you should know some things,” they say. The video goes on to show the shocked citizens of Mumbai as they begin a unique performance on the needs of a safety belt and even how to wear it, based of the aircraft safety procedures.
“If you wear your seat belt, we will bless you,” they say, sending people all over social networks everywhere into fits of giggles.
The video was uploaded onto YouTube by Ryan Mendonca, with the statement “We wanted to remind reckless motorists about a very basic safety procedure they’d forgotten. In [a] rather unforgettable fashion.” True to their word, this video has received a lot of attention on social networks everywhere, becoming a PSA which truly met its purpose.
The video can also be viewed as a progressive PSA, in the light of India’s recent recognition of a third gender, outside the traditional gender binary.
