Celebrity fashion designer Manish Malhotra was in the city on Tuesday. He addressed members of FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO) on the ‘Changing Façade of Fashion Industry in India’ at Hotel Park.
Manish Malhotra was introduced, by fashion and lifestyle journalist Shalini Sharma, as one of the three Indian fashion designers who reached the Rs 100 crore fashion club.
Speaking about the city, Manish said, I have good memories of Hyderabad. It was in 1990 that I first visited the city. It was during the beginning of my career. I know Chiranjeevi and Venkatesh, and I have lot of friends here. This city is special to me.”
Manish, who has made a maiden venture into jewellery designing, surprised his admirers recently and set a milestone in the world of design and collaborated with Forevermark and Anmol Jewellers for designing of an exquisite piece.
“People say that I get work because of my celebrity friends, which is not true. Nobody gives you work because you are a friend. I get work because I don’t just design clothes, I design dreams. I have been working with Sridevi for 23 years. If I was not delivering what they expected of me I wouldn’t have survived,” Manish said.
When asked about Indian clothes, he said, “They always fascinate me. Our culture is glamorous and rich, and I am fascinated of taking many elements of my fashion designing from our culture. Hyderabad people have great fashion sense. They know what they want.”
When asked to give tips for sensuality, he divulged, “Know yourself, believe in yourself and be confident and present your best self. You need to highlight what is good in you. You don’t need to expose skin to look beautiful. You can be sexy by covering your body. Indian women have good hair and good eyes and that is what makes them sensuous.”
Manish shot to global fame when he designed for Michael Jackson when the singer was in India for a Bollywood show. He has also styled Jean-Claude Van Damme and Reese Witherspoon in Mira Nair’s ‘Vanity Fair’, Kylie Minogue, and Jermaine Jackson and wife Halima. He has the rare distinction of designing looks for over 1,000 films in his career spanning over 20 years. Manish’s hard work resonates with in his reputation of having showcasing the highest number of shows in the fashion fraternity.
