With Hyderabad celebrating in the fervour of Ganesh Chaturthi, the famous Khairatabad Ganesh, is nearly 58 feet tall this year. The 11-day festival witnesses thousands of people participating in the event and seek blessings of Lord Ganesh.

The Ganesh idol had to be remodelled to suit new policies in order to avoid complications with the ongoing metro constructions and also go for an eco-friendly environment. Like every year, the tallest Ganesh idol has been installed in Khairatabad, the heart of the city. Weighing 35 tonnes, the idol has been made of mud and watercolours with PoP as a holding agent.

The construction of the idol begins three months prior to the festival day with 200 workers led by sculpturist works on it. Interestingly, a laddu weighing 5600 kg is placed on the left hand of the Khairatabad Ganesh idol during the festivity and on the eleventh day, the massive laddu is auctioned with the money given to a charitable fund.
On the 11th day, a big procession takes place and the Ganesh idol is immersed at Hussain Sagar Lake with the help of cranes.

The “Khairatabad Ganesh” was initiated by late Mr. S. Sankarayya, who was a freedom fighter and since then it has been the grandest Ganesh Utsav in Hyderabad.
