The silent revolution against Modi

Update: 2019-01-23 05:30 IST

Some are heckling the efforts of the opposition to unite and forge a common front to defeat Modi government. They are making fun of the recent Calcutta conclave and criticising that the opposition is sans any agenda. The common agenda is to undo the damage unleashed by Modi government in the form of demonetisation, division of people on issues like religion etc. When the evil becomes overpowering the priority is to remove the evil. Everything else comes later. the efforts of the opposition are to be viewed against this backdrop of several failures of Modi government.

The unemployment is growing unabated and farmer’s distress is mounting by the day. At the Calcutta meeting the leaders of various parties have said in one voice that their main aim is to defeat BJP in the coming elections and dethrone Modi. Even Modi’s own party men like Yashwant Sinha and Shatrughan Sinha attended the meet and drew wide applause from the crowd. They spoke about the need to bring down the government to arrest the decline in social and economic fronts.

It may be true that in the past the efforts of the opposition to unite and form governments didn’t succeed well. But that should not deter the opposition from making efforts yet again. It may be recalled that it was the efforts of opposition parties under the banner of Janata party that brought down Indira Gandhi who imposed emergency.

Indira Gandhi ridiculed the opposition as ‘Khichdi’ at that time but the same Khichdi threw her out in the elections. It does no good to decry the efforts of opposition. Nobody would have dreamt it possible to raise even a murmur against Modi in 2014. Now there is a collective roar to oust him in the next elections following widespread disenchantment of people with his style of functioning.
