New Delhi: Bringing protests to the doorstep of parliament, Andhra Pradesh Ministers, MLAs and MPs from Seemandhra region staged a demonstration in front of Gandhi statue in Parliament House complex on Tuesday, opposing the government decision to create Telangana. The protest dharna was joined by Union Ministers from Seemandhra – HRD Minister M M Pallam Raju, Tourism Minister K Chiranjeevi, Textiles Minister Kavuri Sambasiva Rao, Minister of State for Finance J D Seelam, Minister of State for Commerce D Purandeshwari, Minister of State for Petroleum Panabaka Lakshmi and Minister of State for Telecom Killi Kripa Rani.

All the Seemandhra Congress leaders later called on AICC general secretary in-charge of Andhra Pradesh Digvijay Singh. In fact, Digvijay Singh also doubles as member of the high-powered Antony Committee, which has been set up specifically to address the concerns of the people of Seemandhra region. The Seemandhra Congress leaders are intensifying their protests ahead of the Union Home Ministry preparing the Cabinet Note on the formation of Telangana.

According to party sources, there is a realisation that once the Cabinet Note is prepared, the process becomes irreversible and it is only a matter of time before Telangana is created.

The Seemandhra Congress leaders are making a last-ditch attempt to force the Congress High Command to review its decision, ahead of the preparation of the Cabinet Note, given the enormity of the outburst of protests in the Seemandhra region. Although the Seemandhra Congress did expect that the protests would break out in the wake of the decision to create Telangana, several of them privately confessed that they did not expect it on such a scale. Although the Congress High Command is sympathetic towards the Seemandhra Congress leaders, indeed it is set irrevocably on the path of creating Telangana.

The placards held out by them stated, “Keep Andhra Pradesh United” and “We Want United Andhra Pradesh.” Slogans raised on the occasion were, “We don’t want division” and “We want justice.”

Several senior state ministers and former ministers took part in the dharna at Parliament House like V Parthasarathy, Kasu Venkat Krishna Reddy, Shailajanath, Ghanta Srinivas Rao, C Ramachandraiah, Kondru Murali and J C Diwakar Reddy. Several MPs took part in the protests like Ananta Venkataram Reddy, K Sai Pratap, Chinta Mohan, K V P Ramachander Rao, Vundavalli Arun Kumar, K Bapi Raju, L Rajagopal and Botcha Jhansi Lakshmi. These leaders gathered at the residence of Mangunta Srinivasulu Reddy in the morning and held confabulations on the strategy to be adopted to bring their concerns to the notice of the High Command.
