New Delhi: Determined to carry forward the process of carving out the new state of Telangana, the UPA Government will take the issue to the Union Cabinet in 20 days time. This was indicated by Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde. After the Cabinet nod, the Group of Ministers (GoM) will be set up to go into the issues arising from the decision on bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh and creation of Telangana.
The Home Minister said, “We are preparing a note to pass a resolution in the Cabinet. It will be sent to the Law Ministry for legal vetting. I hope the Note will be presented before the Cabinet within 20 days.” This will be followed by forwarding the Resolution to the Andhra Pradesh Assembly for its opinion on the formation of Telangana. The Centre has already made it clear that whether or not the resolution is adopted by the State Assembly, it will not impact the process of creation of Telangana. It is merely advisory in nature and it is certainly not binding on the centre, insist the government sources.
With the setting up the Group of Ministers (GoM), leaders of other political parties, NGOs and others stakeholders having inhibitions to appear before the Antony Committee set up by Congress president Sonia Gandhi, can appear to represent their concerns before the GoM.
Unfazed by the protests in the Seemandhra region, the Congress-led UPA government is determined to press ahead with the formation of Telangana. The Congress is also sensing political advantage from its decision on the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, which will help the party in the upcoming simultaneous Assembly and Parliament elections slated for 2014.
