New Delhi: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy called on Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde. The Chief Minister was in the capital to take part in the National Integration Council (NIC) meeting on Monday. Kiran Reddy’s meeting with Shinde assumes significance as it comes at a time when the Home Ministry is in the process of drafting the Cabinet Note on Telangana. The Home Ministry is also grappling with the issue of status of Hyderabad.

Cabinet Note on Telangana

The status of Hyderabad has become a source of worry for the Union Home Ministry. It is unable to arrive at any widely-acceptable formula on Hyderabad. The Congress in Andhra Pradesh is vertically split on regional lines on Hyderabad. The Telangana Congress leaders are insisting that Hyderabad should be made over to Telangana, as envisaged in the Congress Working Committee (CWC) Resolution of July 30.

The Seemandhra Congress leaders are staking a claim, saying they have an equal, if not greater, right over Hyderabad and it cannot be given over to Telangana.

The Chief Minister is understood to have briefed the Home Minister on the unprecedented agitation in the 13 districts of Seemandhra region. People from all walks of life have hit the streets, including women, youths, employees, businessmen, students and teachers. Kiran Reddy is understood to have impressed upon the Home Minister the need to reach out to the people of Seemandhra region, address their concerns and bring the stakeholders on board, before proceeding in the matter.

Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister was instrumental in meeting Seemandhra Congress MPs and in trying to persuade them not to press their resignations. In fact, the Chief Minister did succeed in averting an embarrassment for the Congress for now.
