New Delhi: Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Lalu Prasad was out of jail on Friday after the Supreme Court granted him bail in a fodder scam case. Lalu Prasad was awarded five years' imprisonment by the Special Ranchi court for his involvement in the scam.

There were 44 accused in the case and 37 of them have already been granted bail and bail applications of six others are under the consideration of the trial court. The apex court bench headed by Chief Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice Ranjan Gogoi, while granting bail to Lalu, noted that similarly situated other accused too have already been granted bail.

The court noted that out of five years' jail awarded to Lalu, he has already undergone one year of the sentence in two phases, which included incarceration for 10 months during the course of trial and another two months since he was convicted and sentenced to jail.
The apex court has left it to the Ranchi trial court to decide on the conditionalities to be imposed on Lalu before he is released on bail.
Meanwhile, MPs belonging to various parties welcomed the Supreme Court's decision to grant bail to Lalu Prasad. Shivanand Tiwari of the JD(U), RJD's main rival in Bihar, said, "I felt good when I heard that he has been given bail. Even dacoits and robbers get bail. So not surprising that Lalu Prasad has been given bail. But I would still say I am happy".
Congress leader and Union Law Minister Kapil Sibal also hailed the apex court's decision and said, "We are happy that Laluji has got bail. We think the elections are near and he is a leader of a big political party. Everything must happen according to the law. We welcome the bail granted to him by the Supreme Court".
