New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is all set to address a media conference on January 3, may pitch in for Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi being projected as the Congress Prime Ministerial candidate.

Timing of the Prime Minister’s media conference assumes significance, as it comes ahead of the AICC Session on January 17. There has been a growing clamour for declaring Rahul Gandhi as the Congress Prime Ministerial candidate, with the latest to join the chorus being Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram. Despite the recent electoral setback, the general mood within the party is to project Rahul Gandhi as the Congress Prime Ministerial candidate. In the past, the Prime Minister has himself made it clear that Rahul Gandhi is an ideal choice for Prime Minister. He had even gone on record to declare that he is prepared to work under Rahul Gandhi.

However, Union Information & Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari played down the issue. “Rahul Gandhi, he said, is a natural leader. The Prime Minister has successfully led the Government for 10 years. Sonia Gandhi is the Congress President.

We have a triumvirate providing leadership,” he said. Tewari said, “Congress President Sonia Gandhi has already stated that when at an appropriate time a decision on the Congress Prime Ministerial candidate is taken, it will be informed. The Prime Minister has many times in past one year spoken on the issue and would expect the speculations be put to rest”.
