New Delhi: Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Law Minister Somnath Bharti launched a shrill attack on the media with the latter even accusing it of taking money from Narendra Modi.

Bharti, who is embroiled in an escalating controversy over his "midnight raid" and faced demands for his resignation, later backtracked and apologised after being slammed for his comment.

Bharti said that the charges were false, adding that Delhi Commission for Women's move against him was a "conspiracy to defame" him and was "politically motivated".

The National Commission for Women (NCW) condemned Bharti's statement that the Delhi Women's Commission's move against him was politically motivated.

In his address at an event organised on the eve of Republic Day at Chhatrasal Stadium here, Kejriwal said, "I don't know why media houses want people to speak against me. They are associated either with one party or another."

He argued that "this is not journalism. This is your country as well. This is wrong".

Defending his two-day dharna, Kejriwal asserted he did nothing against the Constitution and charged police with clamping prohibitory orders after knowing about his protest plan.

"I read the Constitution but couldn't find anywhere that a chief minister cannot hold a dharna. I staged a sit-in to raise the issue of women's security. The authorities clamped section 144 of CrPC after knowing my plan. It made me think how come chief minister of Delhi became a security threat."

Kejriwal said that the Jan Lokpal Bill is almost ready, and will be passed next month in a special session of the state assembly at Ramlila Maidan, in the heart of Delhi, amidst the people. "The bill promises strict action against people who indulge in corruption. Under this law, the (corrupt person) will lose his (or her) job and will also be sent to prison," the chief minister said.
