New Delhi: The Home Ministry on Friday revised the sanction given to prosecute the two Italian marines in Kerala fishermen killing case. The clause on death penalty is being dropped in the case.

As per Italy's request, the marines will be charged under a new section of the law, where the maximum penalty is not the death penalty. The marines will now face a maximum of 10 years in jail for the shooting.

Killing of Fishermen: Death Clause Against Italians Dropped

The two Italian marines - Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone - are facing trial in India for allegedly killing two Indian fishermen after allegedly mistaking them for pirates and opening fire on their trawler.

Latorre and Girone were guarding the privately owned Italian-flagged oil-tanker MT Enrica Lexie off the coast of Kerala on February 15, 2012. The marines are currently in the Italian embassy in India.
