Kokrajhar. which is highly volatile will be placed under curfew from 8 pm today, and additional forced has been pumped into the district.
Nitin Khade, Deputy Commissioner of Kokrajhar, told Hans India over phone that the district administration has also beefed up security measures in the entire Kokrajhar district to prevent any untoward incident before and after the counting of votes.
“The district administration along with the Army was trying its best to thwart any kind of subversive activity by any group in the region,” said Khade.
Assam Director General of Police (DGP) Khagen Sarma told the media that additional forces have been pumped into the volatile pockets, and that the security forces are prepared to thwart any incidents.
Meanwhile in a major success for the security force in Assam, yesterday evening a joint team of the army and police launched an operation in Singhason Hill area under Manja police station at Langtibuk, located around 90 km from the district headquarter, Diphu and after a fierce gunbattle managed to gun down six militants belonging to the Karbi Peoples Liberation Tiger (KPLT), including its self styled Commander in Chief Bikash Teron alias Kangthur.
According to the police, five weapons of AK series, 7 mm pistols and SLRs along with a huge cache of ammunitions and medicines were recovered from the slain militants.
The KPLT had unleashed a massive extortion and abduction drive in several parts of the district, and this had become a cause of concern for the security forces, and he outfit had also disrupted the process of election campaigning in the hill districts of Assam in the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls by resorting to a general strike for an indefinite period.
