Mamata Banerjee Staring at Big Win in Bengal: NDTV Exit Poll. Mamata Banerjee could come very close to her stated objective of being the third largest party in the 16th Lok Sabha. Mamata Banerjee could come very close to her stated objective of being the third largest party in the 16th Lok Sabha. NDTV's exit poll shows her Trinamool Congress is set to get about 30 of West Bengal's 42 seats leaving her rivals to scramble for seats in single digits.

That is 11 more than the West Bengal chief minister had won in 2009. Her campaign this time was marked for her focused attack on the BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, who engaged her in a war of words as he campaigned aggressively in the state, where his party has only had minor presence so far.

His efforts are expected to fetch the BJP one seat. The Left which had 15 seats in 2009, is going to win only seven this time, the exit poll shows, and the Congress could settle for four, two less than the six it had won as Mamata Banerjee's junior partner last time.

Apart from the big parties, the Congress and the BJP, a tally of 30 Lok Sabha seats might only be bettered by the J Jayalalithaa of Tamil Nadu, who is set to win 32 seats in her state.

Both Ms Jayalalithaa and Ms Banerjee have been part of the BJP's national alliance the NDA in the past, but while Ms Jayalalithaa's party has indicated that it could be interested in renewing that alliance should the BJP form government at the Centre, Mr Banerjee has emphasised that she is not ready to support a government headed by Mr Modi.
