Supreme Court: Speed up admissionsHyderabad/New Delhi: Pulling the curtains down on the controversy pertaining to holding EAMCET counselling, the Supreme Court on Monday ordered that EAMCET admissions be completed by August 31 as per the provisions laid down in the undivided State of Andhra Pradesh and that the classes must begin from the first week of September.

The order of the apex court comes as a big setback for the Telangana government which wanted time till October to start counselling. Justice S J Mukhopadhyay and Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde directed that the schedule drawn by the Andhra Pradesh Higher Education Council should be adhered to in toto and there should be no deviation from it. Admission process had already been inordinately delayed and there should be no further loss of time, the court said. The Supreme Court is expected to pronounce a detailed order on August 11.

The apex court, after hearing the arguments from both sides, commented that the governments should not bring politics into this matter as the future of the students was important. It also opined that the argument of Telangana government on nativity was also not correct.

The attorney for Telangana, Harish Salve argued that holding counselling was never an issue. However, the Telangana State was against fee reimbursement to students from other States. “Today it can be students from Andhra Pradesh but tomorrow it could be students from other States like Maharashtra or Karnataka. The Telangana State can give fee reimbursement only to the students of Telangana,” he said.

While the Andhra Pradesh government welcomed the decision and appealed to the Telangana government to make a statement that it would abide by the court’s directive and cooperate with them in completing the process, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao held an emergency meeting with education minister G Jagdish Reddy and decided that it would wait till the written orders from the court were received before taking a decision on its next move.

It may be mentioned here that the higher education council decided to issue EAMCET counselling notification on August 7. This decision was opposed by Telangana Government which sought time till October to complete the process. It is arguing that time is needed to decide on rules and regulations for fee imbursement.

The Andhra Pradesh government on the other side was saying that the students would lose valuable academic year if counselling was postponed till October.

According to the notification issued by the Higher education council, Certificate verification will be from August 7 to August 23. Fifty seven helpline centres are sets up, 34 in Andhra Pradesh and 23 in Telangana. It is estimated that 2,15,336 students will attend the counseling.
