New Delhi: The first political crisis for the Modi sarkaar has erupted. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has threatened to quit politics. In a strong reaction to media reports indicating that his son Pankaj has been ticked off for misconduct at the highest level. After his son is ignored for the party’s ticket for the UP State Assembly from the Noida constituency, the Home Minister not long ago described as the captain of the team that brought BJP to power in 2014 elections is now disturbed enough to contemplate ‘sanyas’ from politics.

For more than a fortnight now, political circles have been agog with rumours that Pankaj has been ticked off for his misconduct at the highest level, and political observers saw a confirmation for these rumours in party’s denial of the ticket to him for the Noida Assembly seat. Instead of Pankaj, the party chose a 62-year old worker Vimla Batham. The Home Minister referred to these rumours in his interaction with the media, and also confirmed that he had met party president Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this context. Within minutes of Singh’s coming out in the open, the PMO issued a statement denying the allegations. Similarly, Amit Shah also issued a statement denying these baseless allegations.

Congress spokesperson Ajay Maken’s observation in this context proved the point. “We are the principal opposition party. We have not levelled any allegations against the Home Minister. The PMO has denied the allegations, but what are the allegations? Who has made these allegations? It is time for the Prime Minister to come clean,” said Maken. Considering that Singh has blamed a cabinet colleague for these rumours, it is obvious that there is a lot of substance to the charges of ‘misconduct’ against his son, and this is also an indication of lack of trust as well as infighting in the top echelons of the Modi government.
