New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday led the nation to pay rich tributes to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India's first Home Minister, on his 139th birth anniversary and remarked that, "As Ramakrishna Paramhans appears to be incomplete without Swami Vivekananda, similarly without Sardar Patel, even Mahatma Gandhi seems incomplete. It was a unique partnership that strengthened the struggle for independence." Patel’s birth anniversary will be commemorated as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas every year.
After paying floral tributes to a statue of Sardar Patel in Delhi near Parliament House, Modi flagged off a countrywide "Run for Unity" with thousands of participants by his side. After administering the oath of unity to the participants, Modi briskly walked along the Raj Path to India Gate.
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Union Minister for Urban Development and Parliamentary Affairs M Venkaiah Naidu and several prominent personalities including Gautam Gambir, boxer Sushil Kumar accompanied the Prime Minister.
Earlier, addressing participants, Modi said Sardar Patel’s life was a journey of “service to the motherland” and he was “truly the architect of modern India”. "Let us not forget that a nation that disregards its history can never create one...Don't divide history, legacy in narrow confines of ideology," he said.
"The country which forgets history can never create history, so for a country filled with aspirations, a country whose youth has dream, we should not forget our personalities of history.... country should not divide history and legacy according to our ideologies," he told the gathering. "Today is the inspiring day when we remember Sardar Patel," he added.
