Guwahati: At least 43 tribals were killed by suspected militants of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Songbijit) or NDFB(S) in Sonitpur and Kokrajhar districts of Assam on Tuesday evening. Five people were killed in Kokrajhar, while 30 were killed in Sonitpur. The killings took place in five separate attacks by the militants.

The attacks may be retaliation by the militants, say police officers; several suspected militants of the NDFB-S have been killed by the Army and the state police in encounters in the last few months. The victims were reportedly all members of tribal communities. The entire state has been put on red alert and the international border between India and Bhutan in lower Assam has been sealed.

Counter-insurgency operations have been launched in the Bodoland Territorial Area District, which comprises the four districts of Kokrajhar, Baksa, Udalguri and Chirang. The largest number of casualties were reportedly in Paboi reserved forest area near the border with Arunachal Pradesh in Sonitpur district, said senior police officials.

"All these people were killed in serial attacks by suspected militants of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) (Songbijit)," a police official said. In Kokrajhar district, four bodies were recovered while three others were suspected to have been killed in two different attacks by NDFB(S) militants in the evening.

"The first attack took place at Pakhiriguri under Serfanguri police station in which four women were killed and four others were injured," Kokrajhar SP Sunil Kumar said. Three more persons are suspected to have been killed in another attack by NDFB(S) militants at Ultapani under Kokrajhar police station.

"But as the place at Ultapani is very interior, the police party is reaching there to give verified facts," Kumar said. The SP said the injured have been rushed to a hospital in Kokrajhar town from Pakhiriguri, which is in a jungle near Indo-Bhutan border. At least three persons were seriously injured in six serial grenade blasts and firing in Kokrajhar district.
