New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said in Parliament that the release from prison of hardline separatist Masarat Alam in Jammu and Kashmir was unacceptable and that the decision was taken without the Centre's consent. "I also lend my voice to the outrage on the release of the separatist... this is not one party's outrage, it is the nation's outrage," PM Modi said in the Lok Sabha, promising that there will be "no compromise on the integrity of the nation" or public safety and security. The Jammu and Kashmir government, PM Modi said, had not consulted the Centre on "its activities post government formation," last week.

WHO IS MASARAT ALAM

Kashmiri separatist Masarat Alam was on Saturday released after four years by the Mufti-led government.

  • Masarat Alam belongs to the Muslim League and is believed to be close to hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani.
  • Alam had evaded arrest for months during the 2010 unrest.
  • He had made fiery speeches at sensitive places.
  • Alam was arrested during the 2010 unrest in the Kashmir Valley.
  • He was accused of inciting youth during the unrest in which at least 112 people were killed in
  • Over 110 people, mostly young students, died during a massive protest in Kashmir.
  • Alam, a defiant hardline separatist leader, has been accused of organising the protest following the killing of three people by Indian Army near Baramulla.
  • The people, who initially were identified as Pakistani infiltrators, were killed in an alleged 'fake encounter'.
  • Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq launched the protest.
  • Hurriyat Conference sought for complete demilitarization of Jammu and Kashmir.
  • Alam's party -- Muslim League party is a part of Hurriyat Conference.
  • As many as six policemen were promoted when Alam was arrested in Oct 2010.
  • Rs 10 lakh cash reward was distributed among cops and informers who had worked in the mission of nabbing Alam.
  • Alam faces around 15 pending cases which included those registered under section 120 and 121 of Ranbir Penal Code (waging war against the country) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
