BJP MLA Kavinder Gupta elected as Speaker in J & K Assembly Even as the BJP and PDP alliance was rough on the issue of a separatist from Jail, the BJP MLA Kavinder Gupta on Wednesday was elected unanimously as Speaker of the 12th Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir.

A new chapter has begun in the legislative history of J & K with a BJP leader, a being elected as the Speaker. The party rose from a miniscule status to be in par with the ruling party in view of the huge campaign against separatists having the patriotic and nationalist zeal running high among Kashmiri's.


Even as the BJP and PDP alliance was rough on the issue of a separatist from Jail, the BJP MLA Kavinder Gupta on Wednesday was elected unanimously as Speaker of the 12th Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir.


The state's Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs Basharat Bukhari moved a motion in the Assembly saying that Kavinder Gupta, a member of the house, be chosen as the Speaker and was seconded by Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh.


The speaker was elected with voice vote with no opposition going against the motion. Mr Gupta is an MLA from Gandhinagar constituency in Jammu district and was taken to the speaker's chair by Dr Nirmal Singh, Basharat Bukhari along with National Conference's (NC) Mubarak Gul.


Chief Minister Mufti Mohmmad Sayeed, former Chief Minister and NC Legislative Party leader Omar Abdullah, Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh, Congress Legislative leader Nawang Rigzin Jora, CPI(M) leader MY Tarigam welcomed and congratulated the newly elected speaker.
