New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Canada as momentous and added that the enthusiastic response from People of Indian origin across the world reflects his successes in governance over the last 11 months.

"This is a momentous visit to Canada, coming 42 years after Indira Gandhi visited Canada. I think the enthusiasm of People of Indian Origin across the world shows the kind of response he is getting for his successes in governance over the last 11 months," said BJP spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao.

Rao added that the atmosphere at Prime Minister's address to the Indian Diaspora in Toronto was as great as the rock star reception he received at the Madison Square in New York.

"The important thing about the reception that Prime Minister attended in Toronto, where Indian Diaspora were present in large numbers to welcome and cheer for Mr. Modi, the atmospherics at this event were as great as they were when Prime Minister visited the United States and he received a rock star reception at Madison Square in New York," Rao said.

Prime Minister Modi had earlier described the Indian Diaspora event held at Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto as an ' unforgettable experience'.

He also thanked his Canadian counterpart Stephen Harper for the hospitality accorded to him during his visit.

Prime Minister Modi had attended a reception hosted by Harper before addressing the Indian Diaspora.

He also met Canadian Governor General David Johnston and attended a ceremonial reception before being accorded a guard of honour.

Prime Minister Modi arrived in Ottawa on Tuesday, for the third and final leg of his three-nation, nine-day tour.
