New Delhi: The central government on Tuesday cancelled the licenses of 4,470 NGOs under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act.

The decision regarding the cancellation of the licenses under the FCRA has been taken by the union home ministry after examining their activities that allegedly included non-filing of annual returns and other anomalies.

Official sources said that all associations were given proper notice by the foreigners division of the home ministry with adequate time to reply before their FCRA licenses were cancelled

In the last round of crackdown, licences of nearly 9,000 NGOs were cancelled in April last for alleged violation of Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA).

Prominent organisations whose FCRA licenses were cancelled include Panjab University, Chandigarh, Gujarat National Law University, Gargi College (Delhi), Lady Irwin College Delhi, Vikram Sarabhai Foundation and Kabir floated by Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia.

The fresh round of cancellation process of the 4,470 NGOs started on May 6 and the highest number of such voluntary organisations -- as many as 971 -- were de-registered on 9th June .
