New Delhi: The Opposition Congress and Aam Aadmi Party on Monday upped the ante on External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj's alleged links with former IPL chief Lalit Modi, with the Congress reiterating its demand that she should resign.

Continuing its attack on Sushma Swaraj for "helping" Modi - who was served an Enforcement Directorate notice for alleged financial impropriety - to procure documents to travel to Portugal, the Congress termed her excuses on the issue "totally bogus".

Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi has joined the demand for removal of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in the controversy over the Lalit Modi visa.

"There is only one man running this country and the government, that is Narendra Modi. He should stop protecting Lalit Modi," said Rahul.

Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala said, "It is clear that the BJP was aiding a fugitive of law."

"Lalit Modi who's accused of betting, black money laundering was aided by External Affairs Minister (Sushma Swaraj). The minister has herself acknowledged her association with the tainted Lalit Modi. The entire BJP government is aiding and abetting a fugitive of law, perhaps with tacit approval of the PM," he said.

The Congress spokesperson also alleged a "quid pro quo" between Sushma Swaraj and Modi, who has been living in London since 2010.
