Guwahati: Assam Governor PB Acharya on Wednesday said that, the Senior Citizens’ are the assets to the Nation. During a Senior Citizens’ Conference organised at Raj Bhavan in Guwahati the Assam Governor met and interacted with Senior Citizens, members of Senior Citizens’ Organisations, senior officials and members of the Rajya Sainik Board and senior officials and members of Scouts and Guides from different districts of the state.

“The objective of the function was to make the senior citizens feel that they are the assets to the Nation and not burdens. To make them understand that they have an important role to play for the society in maintaining peace, tranquility and in spreading the message of brotherhood. That their experiences in life can be a source of inspiration to different sections of the society particularly to the students community and the youth in general,” the Governor said.

The Governor said that it was fortunate that he was addressing three groups of persons who were all senior citizens and though the senior citizens of two of the groups viz., the Sainik Board and the Scouts and Guides were well organised, the individual senior citizens were not properly organised.

He laid emphasis on proper organisation of all senior citizens and remarked that only through suitable and planned organisation they could bring about constructive change to the society. The Governor urged the senior citizens that on no account should they feel inferior to anybody or feel old or incapable. He added that there is a hidden source of energy in everybody which should be fully utilised for the betterment of the future generations in particular and the improvement of the society in general.

“Let us be assets to the Nation. If we plan properly we can do something. Credibility of the person who assumes the role of the leader can make a success of everything. You yourselves can change your society. Act with love and respect and not out of fear. Organise yourselves; organisation is power,” PB Acharya said. The Governor’s speech was followed by an interactive session where many of those present participated.

The conference decided to bring senior citizens’ of all districts under one umbrella and also to make a common platform among the three organisations to work coordinately for the development of the society and also for the development of the senior citizens’ conditions.
