Extremely disappointed with the Election Commission's move to issue notice to party vice-president Rahul Gandhi, the Congress on Monday said the former has not committed any mistake by making his stand clear on the growing intolerance in the country and asked the poll body to work with honesty.

"The Election Commission must work with honesty. It is important for the Election Commission to be competent and fair. What wrong has Rahul Gandhi said?"asked Congress leader Rashid Alvi.

"Will you issue notice if he has said that there is growing intolerance in the nation? Has he said anything wrong by stating that the BJP and RSS are trying to divide the country between the Hindus and the Muslims?" he added.

Another Congress leader Pramod Tiwari echoing similar sentiments said Rahul Gandhi has not made any wrong statement.

"I believe the Election Commission will realise this and withdraw its notice," he added.

The Election Commission has issued separate showcause notices to Rahul Gandhi, BJP president Amit Shah and RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav for making statements which violate the Model Code of Conduct. The poll body has asked the trio to submit their replies by November 4.

The Election Commission has sought a clarification from the Congress vice-president about his 'BJP habitually drives a difference between Hindus and Muslims' remark made in Madhubani.
