Counting of votes in the civic body elections began here on Saturday from 8 a.m. at 22 centres across Tripura.

Elections took place last Wednesday and over five lakh voters will decide the fate of a record breaking 886 candidates vying for seats in the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) and nineteen Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats.

They include 429 women. About 290 wards are up for grabs, which is a record in the state's electoral history.

Meantime, as many as 20,027 voters would decide the fate of 48 candidates in the by-elections.

The ruling Left Front has already won 10 seats uncontested after the opposition parties failed to put up candidates.

Of the total polling stations, 378 polling booths have been identified as 'A', while 279 polling booths have been rated as 'B'.

The main fight in the poll will be between the ruling Left Front and the opposition Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Till now results of 20 AMC seats have been declared of which the Left Front has won 16 seats while the Congress is in the second position with four seats.

Meantime, in the Nagar Panchayat Left Front has won all 19 seats which were declared.
