Meerut: BJP MLA Sangeet Som claimed that he had received a death threat from the Islamic State (IS) on Saturday morning.

Som claimed that he had received two internet calls from a person speaking broken Hindi and identified himself to be member of the terrorist outfit in Syria and Iraq in his complaint to the local police.

An accused in the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots, Som told police that the calls came around 9.30am. In the first, the caller allegedly made the death threat, saying assassins had been dispatched to carry out the plan and no security forces would be able to save the legislator.

Som challenged the caller before disconnecting the line, leading to another call that repeated the threat. Local police are trying to ascertain the identity of the caller.

“I have reported the matter to the police and given them details of the phone conversation,” said Som, who was given Z plus security last year after two attempts on his life. Unidentified assailants had fired at his home in Sardhana and, later a bomb exploded near the venue where he was to address a rally in Roorkee.
