Jammu : The government formation in Jammu and Kashmir, which is hanging fire since the demise of former chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed on December 7, has entered a crucial and decisive phase after Governor N.N Vohra asked both the parties to clear their stand on the matter on Tuesday.
A of the meeting with the Governor, former deputy chief minister and BJP leader Nirmal Singh on Tuesday held a meeting with Mehbooba.

He, however, refused to divulge any information to the media, saying his meeting with Mehbooba was just a courtesy call.

"This is for the first time after Mufti Sahab's demise that Mehbooba ji has come to Jammu. She has stayed in the guest house. This was just a courtesy call. She is our coalition partner," Singh told ANI.

Leaders of both the parties - Peoples Democratic Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party - will be meeting the Governor separately at Raj Bhawan here in the late afternoon to discuss the government formation.

The PDP Legislature Party had authorised party president Mehbooba Mufti to meet the Governor and convey him party's point of view on in the context of publicly stated position on continuation of the alliance with the BJP.

The four member state BJP delegation led by Party president Sat Sharma rushed to Delhi on Monday for consultations on the issue with party's national president Amit Shah.

Under its own constitution, the state could be put under Governor's Rule for six months.

If the Governor is convinced there are no chances of a government taking power, he can recommend dissolution of the state assembly and seek fresh elections. The state is under Governor's Rule since January 8.

The PDP's Legislature Party did not elect her Legislature Party leader, which indicated that the party was not in a hurry to embrace power.

The PDP has of late come up with clear position regarding the government formation. The party has made it conditional with appropriate movement towards implementation of feasible and tangible components in the 'Agenda of Alliance' that PDP considers sacrosanct.

PDP's position may pressurise BJP in its Jammu constituency as the party fully understands PDP's urgency in doling out results on ground in Kashmir region.

The PDP has definite pressure both from the Kashmir electorate as well as its main opposition National Conference and the Congress. Perhaps, PDP's 10-month experience with its coalition partner and the feedback from the ground compelled the party to reassert for its own survival in the politics of the state.
