Not a Bihar like grand alliance, but grand understanding had made by Congress and AIUDF to defeat BJP in the assembly poll in Assam hardly left for two months. On Saturday, Badruddin Ajmal led AIUDF had said in a press conference held in Guwahati that the party will contest in 60 constituencies out of 126 constituencies in Assam assembly and they will support to Congress in other 66 constituencies.

AIUDF general secretary Aminul Islam said that, his party will support to Congress in the 66 assembly constituencies in the next poll to fight against BJP.

“We will field candidates in 60 constituencies,” Aminul Islam said.

“We are against the BJP and if necessary we will appeal to our workers to help Congress in those constituencies,” Islam said.

On the other hand, a top source of AIUDF said that the decision for grand understanding with Congress was finalized in Delhi after series of meeting held between AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal and top Congress leaders.

In 2011, AIUDF had fielded candidates in 77 assembly constituencies and won 18 seats.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi accused AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal of being hand in glove with the BJP by deciding to field candidates in constituencies where they have no chances of winning with the motive of defeating the Congress candidates.

In a statement Gogoi said that AIUDF by deciding to contest at least 60 seats in the coming assembly elections has entered into a tacit understanding with the BJP to defeat the Congress candidates by engineering a split in votes and ensuring the victory of the saffron party.

“By deciding to field candidates in at least 60 constituencies where they have no chances of winning, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal has entered into a political game plan with the BJP, like it did in the last Parliamentary elections, to defeat the Congress candidates,” Gogoi said.

Gogoi said that the people would see through their game plan to grab power by relegating their ideological differences to the backburner.

“If AIUDF is for uniting Muslims to consolidate minority votes, the BJP is also propagating the Hindutva agenda of RSS and uniting Hindus. Both the parties have the same kind of strategy to polarize the electorate on religious lines. AIUDF and BJP are two sides of the same coin,” Gogoi said.

The Assam CM reiterated that the Congress is well poised to fight the assembly polls alone.
