New Delhi: Ever wondered why the blankets in Indian trains stink at times? May be because they are washed only once in two months.“While bedsheets, bedroll and pillow covers are washed every day, the blankets are washed once in every two months,” Minister of State for Railways Manoj Sinha told in the Rajya Sabha on Friday. He said this while answering questions regarding the hygiene of linen supplied on trains.

To which, Rajya Sabha chairman Hamid Ansari replied it was better when the passengers brought their own linen and pillows for train journeys. A Congress MP asked the minister if this might be allowed in future. In response, Sinha said it was a “good advice” and the Railways won’t mind.

Sinha said that while they have 41 mechanised laundries now, they may increase it to 66 in the next two years. After the increase, 85% of the passengers are expected to get blankets that are washed every day. Over 3,15,000 bed-rolls are provided to passengers every day across the country, the minister said. The job has been outsourced in places which are not covered by mechanised laundries, he added.
