Kolkata : With opinion polls predicting that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is facing a tough task to retain power for the consecutive second term, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee embarked on a padyatra (foot march) here today on the occasion of International Women's Day, launching her party's campaign for the West Bengal assembly elections.

Besides her party supporters and activists, a huge crowd joined Mamata on her around one-hour march that commenced from Shyam Bazaar amid much fanfare and concluded at Esplanade.

An overwhelmed Mamata, though made no speech at the event, she told the crowd she was sure that her party would retain power for the consecutive second term looking at their vast presence.

The Election Commission on Friday announced the dates for the West Bengal assembly elections, according to which the first phase of the six-phase voting will take place on April 4 and 11, while the second and third phases will be conducted on April 17 and 21, respectively.

The last three phases of elections will take place on April 25 and 30 April and May5, whereas the votes will be counted and results will be declared on May19.
