My fight is not against Tarun Gogoi, but against poverty: Modi in Assam
Coming out all guns blazing on the Congress government in Assam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday that his fight was against rampant corruption and not with Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who is responsible for the deplorable condition of the once prosperous state.

The Prime Minister, who kick-started Bharatiya Janata Party’s campaign in poll-bound Assam, said his party's motive is to make 'Tinsukia' 'Sukhiya' in the true sense of the word.
“Assam was one of the most prosperous states at the time of independence. Today, it is one of the poorest. The Assam elections are a personal loss for me because I've to send one of my most capable ministers Sarbanand Sonowal for campaigning, but this is surely going to benefit Assam," he said while addressing a rally in Tinsukhia.
Asserting that the Congress was responsible for the poor condition of the once glorious state, the Prime Minister called on the people of Assam to give him five years to turn things around.
"You gave 60 years to Congress expecting good things; I ask nothing but five years from you. My fight is not against CM Tarun Gogoi ji, my fight is against poverty and corruption. When we got independence, Assam was in the list of top five developed states. Now, it is in the list of the worst," the Prime Minister said.
Stating that he wanted to do something good for Assam, Modi further said that after these elections, the state will get a young Chief Minister in Sarbanand and scale new heights of progress.
Highlighting his main agenda for the state's progress, he said, “Development, speedy development and all round development were the main facets of his plan.”
The Prime Minister has a jam packed schedule today with back-to-back rallies lined up in Majuli, Bihpuria, Bokakhat and a meeting with the locals at Jorhat.
He will be the first Prime Minister to visit Majuli, an island located in between river Brahmaputra and Lohit.
The state will go to polls in two phases on April 4 and 11 and the counting will be done on May 19.
