Hyderabad/New Delhi: Five officials of the Hyderabad-based construction company IVRCL were detained in connection with the collapse of a flyover, Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar said on Friday, even as the company described the collapse as an “accident.”

A day after, another official of the company dubbed the accident as an “act of god.” “An act of god was just an expression only to describe that it is under no one’s control,” IVRCL legal advisor P Sita told reporters in Hyderabad.

Meanwhile, a team of the West Bengal police arrived in the city on Friday and issued summons to IVRCL Chairman and Managing Director E Sudheer Reddy and five others asking them to be present before them within 48 hours in order to question them in connection with the collapse of the flyover in Kolkata on Thursday which claimed 24 lives. The Kolkata police have brought murder charges among others against the IVRCL officials .

Sita said, “It is an accident. The company is into construction activity for the past 27 years and this is the first unfortunate incident. “It is an ‘Act of God. It is under no one's control. We are surprised and extremely shocked. We are there to cooperate with the investigation, ”she said. Showing a photograph of the mishap site published in a newspaper, Sita said that it looked like a site of a bomb blast. “There were various aspects which should be looked into,” she added.

After verifying documents at the IVRCL Company headquarters at Banjara Hills, an official from the Kolkata police told the media that summons have been issued to CMD Sudheer Reddy and four others under section 41 (A) of CrPC and they were asked to present before them within two days.

A case has been registered against the company under section 304, section 308 and section 407 of the IPC and the branch office of the IVRCL at Kolkata has been seized. According to sources, though an agreement to construct the flyover was made in 2007, works started only after two years. The construction of the flyover was supposed to be completed within 18 months from the date of starting work. Works on nearly 80 per cent of the flyover have been completed.
