New Delhi: A renewed clamour to appoint Rahul Gandhi as the party-president has gripped the Congress, with leaders anticipating an imminent organisational reshuffle in the aftermath of the party’s electoral debacle in the recently-held state polls.

Incidentally, in a message of imminent change of guard in the Congress, party president Sonia Gandhi has said that it's time for "the baton to be handed over to someone else" as media reports say her son and party vice-president Rahul Gandhi will soon take over his mother's mantle.

Sonia Gandhi, 69, has been Congress President since April 1998. Her son, Rahul Gandhi, 45, is the party's No 2. Several leaders – from Congress deputy leader in the Lok Sabha Amarinder Singh to parliamentarian Sushmita Dev --- are batting for vice-president Rahul’s elevation to the post held by his mother, Sonia Gandhi, even as there is no indication when the changes may take place.

The buzz comes at a time the party is facing tough questions over its electoral downslide after the 2014 general election loss. Rahul Gandhi's campaign for the general election fetched the party only 44 seats - its worst-ever result. Since then, the Congress has lost power in Assam and Kerala, prompting calls for a “major surgery” by a section of leaders.
