'Selfish' AIADMK least concerned about growth of Tamil Nadu: DMK
DMK MP TKS Elangovan on Sunday said it was unfortunate that the people of Tamil Nadu have given a fresh five-year term to the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), which is selfish and least bothered about the state\'s economic growth.
Chennai : DMK MP TKS Elangovan on Sunday said it was unfortunate that the people of Tamil Nadu have given a fresh five-year term to the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), which is selfish and least bothered about the state's economic growth.
"We know this government will not act for anything that is good for the people or which is good for the economic growth of Tamil Nadu. They only care about themselves," Elangovan told ANI.
"This government has not shown any interest in the development of the state. It has been going on for the last five years. Unfortunately, the people of Tamil Nadu have given them another five years," he added.
Highlighting the fishermen row, Elangovan dared Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa to visit New Delhi and fight with the Centre if she is really concerned about the community.
"She should meet the Prime Minister and ask him what you are doing to protect our fishermen. If the Chief Minister is really interested in the affairs of the state then she should go to Delhi and fight with the Prime Minister," he said.
Jayalalithaa had yesterday written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to help release the four Indian fishermen, who were apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy earlier on Thursday.
There have been several alleged incidents of Sri Lankan Navy personnel firing on Indian fishermen fishing in the Palk Strait, where New Delhi and Colombo are separated by only 12 nautical miles.
The Sri Lankan Government wants India to ban use of mechanized trawlers in the Palk Strait region and negotiations on the same are going on.
The Indian Government has always taken up the issue of safety of Indian fishermen on a priority basis with the Sri Lankan Government.
Prime Minister Modi had last month stressed on the need for a permanent solution to the fishermen issue during talks with visiting Sri Lankan president Maithripala Sirisena in the national capital.
He stressed on the need 'to develop a mechanism and find a permanent solution to the issue of fishermen straying into each other waters.'
The DMK's bad run continued as the AIADMK retained power winning 136 of the 232 constituencies despite most exit polls predicting a win for M. Karunanidhi-led party.
This is Jayalalithaa's fourth term in office. Her earlier tenures as the Chief Minister were 1991-96, 2001-06 and 2011-16.
