New Delhi: A tweet by a desperate mother travelling by a train recently seeking milk for her hungry child led to the launch of 'Janani Sewa' on the Indian Railways by Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu here on Wednesday. Recalling his Budget announcement of 2016-17, Suresh Prabhu said he was moved by the incident and resolved to look into the issue as it was affecting thousands of mothers in the country travelling in the Indian trains.

Mothers with infants in tow travelling long distances faced a major hurdle in feeding their children as fresh warm milk was not available, the minister recalled. To address the problem, the Indian Railways would now make available all essential items like baby food, hot milk and hot water, etc at railway stations. The facility is being introduced at over 25 stations, including New Delhi, Mumbai CST, Mumbai Central, Howrah, Chennai Central, Nagpur, Pune, Surat, Lucknow, Moradabad, etc.

This apart, Suresh Prabhu also launched ‘Children Menu Items' - a meal combo for children in the age group of 5-12 years on trains passing through New Delhi, Howrah, Chennai Egmore and Mumbai Central stations through e-catering and also through purchase across the counter.

According to Suresh Prabhu, this facility aimed at providing children healthy and quality diet and not just fast food. These items could be ordered by the passengers through e-catering website of IRCTC, a specified phone number, SMS, Mobile Apps and a four digit (1323) all India Toll Free Number. The third passenger friendly initiative launched by the minister here on Wednesday was the facility of Optional Catering Service.

This was being undertaken on a trial basis on two pairs of trains ie, Nizamuddin to Mumbai Central August Kranti Rajdhani Express (Train No 12954-53) and Pune to Secunderabad Shatabdi Express (Train No 12025-26).
