New Delhi: The CBI on Monday arrested Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s principal secretary Rajender Kumar and four others in connection with a case of showing undue favours to a private company in awarding government contracts worth more than Rs 50 crore.

Kumar, a 1989 IAS officer, was called along with Tarun Sharma, a deputy secretary in Kejriwal’s office, besides three others for questioning at the Central Bureau of Investigation headquarters on Monday morning. After being questioned for half a day, the CBI decided to place the two officers under arrest along with a close aide of Kumar, Ashok Kumar, and directors of a private firm, Sandeep Kumar and Dinesh Gupta.

The CBI had carried out searches at the Delhi Secretariat on December 16, 2015, saying it was investigating corruption charges against Kumar. Kejriwal, however, claimed his office was also raided, and linked it to a probe he had ordered against Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.

The CBI later denied it searched Kejriwal’s office. “The Central government has stooped to a new low seeing the gains made by the Aam Aadmi Party in Goa, Punjab and other states,” Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said after Kumar’s arrest.

All five accused will be produced in Delhi’s Patiala House court on Tuesday. Known to be close to Kejriwal, the senior IAS officer was one of the Aam Aadmi Party’s first bureaucratic appointments during its 49-day stint last year.

The 48-year-old was subsequently given charge of several important departments, including transport and education, before taking over as the CM’s secretary. The 1989-batch officer was also at the centre of a pitched battle between the city government and Lt Governor Najeeb Jung in June, after Kejriwal appointed his trusted officer as the home secretary.
