New Delhi: The Khadi and Village Industries Commission has unveiled the world's largest charkha (spinning wheel) at the Terminal 3 of the IGI Airport in Delhi on Tuesday.

The 4-tonne charkha was made from high quality Burma teak wood by 42 carpenters from Ahmedabad in 55 days. The charkha, which is estimated to last 50 years, is 9 ft wide, 17 ft tall and 30 ft long.

BJP president Amit Shah unveiled the charkha and recalled the role of charkha, a source of self-reliance, in India's freedom struggle.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a message to the Khadi Board chairman V K Saxena complimented him and said, "the charkha is a symbol of our glorious heritage and an inspiring reminder of our freedom struggle led by the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi.

I hope the charkha will serve to remind travellers at the IGI Airport the timeless heritage and the values of sustainability and harmony that it stands for".

Saxena said, "the charkha like the memorial to unknown soliders, is a memorial to the unknown rural masses, who responded to the call of the Father of the Nation and took to the demonstrated ways of self-reliance and dignity of labour." G M Rao, chairman of the GMR group, also spoke.
