At the directive of the Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the Water Resources Department has suspended four officials for exhibiting gross negligence of duty during the current wave of flood in Majuli.

Guwahati: At the directive of the Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the Water Resources Department has suspended four officials for exhibiting gross negligence of duty during the current wave of flood in Majuli.

An order to this effect has been brought out by the Secretary, Water Resources Department on Friday.

Hari Prasad Gogoi, Junior Engineer, Jibon Khatoniar, Sub Engineer, Jayanti Mudoi, Section Assistant and Bedanto Kumar Bhuyan, Section Assistant have been suspended pending drawal of departmental proceedings on the charge that they were found absent at the site, at the time of occurrence of breach on Brahmaputra dyke from Bessamora to Haldibari under Majuli Water Resources Department.

Show cause notices have been issued to Buddhi Nath Shyam, Executive Engineer, Majuli Water Resources Division and Babul Chandra Deori, Assistant Executive Engineer, Kamalabari Water Resources Sub-Division.

It may be mentioned that Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal during his visit to Majuli on Thursday along with the Water Resources Minister Keshab Mahanta to supervise the relief and rescue operations in the flood affected areas took serious note on the unauthorised absence and negligence of duties of some officials which attributed to breach of Brahmaputra Dyke resulting in untold inconveniences to the people and loss of properties.

Action on the erring officials has been taken following stern directive from the Chief Minister who called upon all the government officials to stay at the headquarters and stand by the side of the people reeling under flood.
